DJI Matrice 350 RTK: planning a productive survey day

Payload choice, battery planning and field checks for a professional mapping workflow.

Plan the deliverable first

The Matrice 350 RTK is an enterprise aircraft platform. Its usefulness depends on the selected payload and the data required by the project. A detailed site orthomosaic and a vegetation-covered terrain survey can call for different acquisition and processing approaches. SpaceChamps uses equipment selection as part of a complete survey brief, including the outputs the client will actually use.

Treat endurance as a planning input

DJI publishes a maximum flight time under specified test conditions. Operational duration changes with payload, weather, battery condition, route geometry and reserve requirements. A realistic plan includes battery changes, transit, calibration tasks and a response to deteriorating conditions. The aircraft’s IP55 rating also does not mean unrestricted operation in all weather.

RTK needs a checked workflow

An RTK-capable aircraft is not a substitute for validating the final survey. Confirm the correction source, coordinate reference system, solution status and required observations. Prepare independent checkpoints appropriate to the deliverable. If the project relies on later processing, confirm that all required raw observations and supporting files are being recorded before starting production flights.

Make field review routine

Review coverage, image sharpness or point-cloud quality while the team is still on site. Keep flight identifiers, battery records and data folders consistent so a processing team can trace any problem to its acquisition. At handover, include the coordinate system, acquisition dates, limitations and validation results. These habits matter more to a dependable engineering dataset than quoting a maximum endurance figure without its conditions.
